How to Save $2000 on Travel

I recently added up the money I saved on my upcoming trip to Panama and Peru using rewards points.

You can read the whole story on the Frugal Travel Guy blog where I have the honor of a guest post.

I saved money on accommodations using the Chase Marriott Rewards card. I already had quite a few points with Marriott from my days of corporate travel, but the extra 70,000 points I got during a recent sign-up bonus saved me over $760 in hotel bills.

Using my Chase Sapphire card and a few miles I already had with United Airlines, I booked a free roundtrip flight (the total was actually $10) from JFK – PCY – LIM – CUZ. This was a savings of over $1260.

I also used a LAN pass credit card and some points from my Barclay Arrival card to offset other travel costs.

Overall, the total I saved is $2,085 dollars, and I haven’t even left yet!

You can get 50,000 bonus points with the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card. Apply before 7/9/2015.

You can also get 40,000 bonus points with Chase Sapphire Preferred®. Apply before 6/30/2015.
